William Lowery LeeNo photos available Born: 26 Aug 1836 in Jackson (now Putnam) County, Tennessee Died: 1863 (before birth of his son in August) in Jackson (now Putnam) County, Tennessee William Lowery Lee was son of Benjamin Lee and Sarah Roberts, daughter of Joseph Roberts and Rachel Carter. He married Malinda J. McGuffey. They had two children between 1860 and 1863. William Lowery was taken by gunpoint into the confederate service along with his brother, Joseph Richard Lee. We know nothing for certain about what Unit he was in. Perhaps he was never actually mustered. The only reference we have is Joseph Richard's affidavit for pension after the war. Joseph Richard attests that he and his brother were captured and taken by gunpoint. He states: I had come in home to kill a hog for my wife the day they came and captured me. Myself and my brother and William Shanks who lives some place out West, had it arranged to run off and go to Kentucky when they caught myself and my brother. Family oral tradition is that William Lowery had also came home to kill a hog for his wife and on the way back to his unit was bushwacked and killed. No evidence as to who killed him or which side of the conflict. Was he trying to evade the confederates and get through the woods to join the Union like his brother, or was he trying to get back to his confederate unit and was killed by Union sympathizers? If anyone knows more, please let me know. From what I can discover, he has no descendants.
