Company I, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, USA

24 Nov 1862-Deserted 15 Apr 1863

John was the son of Gabriel Herron and Jane Virginia Hunter.  He married his first cousin, Elizabeth "Betsy" Herron, daughter of William "Billy" Herron and Mary "Polly" Medley.  They had eight kids between 1855 and 1872.

John did not perform well for Company I.  He enlisted on 24 Nov 1862 with his family and friends from Mine Lick Creek.  However, after serving five months, he deserted from the camp near Carthage on 15 Apr 1863.  He was captured and placed in the guard house on 31 May 1865.  He escaped from the guard house on 29 Jun 1865.  The charges of desertion remained on his record and he was not furnished with a discharge.  In 1887 his application to have the charge of desertion removed and a discharge furnished was denied.

It is hard to determine what impact this record had on he and his family's social standing.  In any case, the family continued to dwell on Mine Lick Creek in the 8th District of Putnam County.  He died in 1884 and is buried in the Thomas Cemetery in the Thomas Community of Putnam County, Tennessee.
